LONDON REAL SKIN: SAFETY IN THE SUN
Summer is here, hooray! During the summer months we need to be extra careful to protect our skin against premature ageing and more importantly skin cancer. We caught up with Dr Martin Wade, Dermatologist at London Real Skin who has given some useful information with handy tips on how to stay safe in the sun this summer.
“Some sunshine is good for us and helps the body create vitamin D that makes us feel good. However too much sun exposure can increase your risk of skin cancer and can lead to premature ageing of the skin. Tanning is caused by the skin producing more melanin in order to absorb UV radiation, causing the skin to become darker. While people may think that having a tan is healthy, a tan is actually a defense mechanism of the body once it has been ‘damaged’ as it tries to protect itself”. Who knew?!
To combat sun damage Dr Martin Wade, recommends using a daily sun protection product as part of your daily skin care regime. Look for a product that offers both UVA and UVB protection (UV refers to radiation from the sun). When selecting a sun block look for a product that has a minimum of SPF50+ and is a broad spectrum product, that means the sun cream provides protection against UV-B as well as UV-A. While it is the UV-B rays that burn the superficial layers of the skin, it is the UV-A rays which penetrate deep into the dermis of the skin, resulting in premature skin ageing and wrinkling (photoaging).
